My scripted dialogue for E2 is still based around loneliness but furthered by the involvement of another character. The feeling of loneliness is shared by many people not matter if they surrounded by massive groups or live in hectic cities. I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from two of my favourite female directors, one being Sofia Coppola, as a director in most her films she explores the theme of being lonely and how two people can be together but still be truly alone she uses locations and sets to exemplify this feeling of loneliness. A lot of my inspiration from her was taken from the Sofia Coppola archive (Coppola,2023) book which I am an owner of, in this book there are; on set pictures, script pages and notes from behind the scene planning. This has allowed me to be completely inspired by her dialogue and the way it’s formatted and the stories it tells. My main film I focused on from her was Lost in Translation which was actually referenced in the dialogue as it’s a great example of two strangers in a environment which is also a stranger can find solace within each other.
Andrea Arnold is also an inspiration for my script due to her raw coming of age films that focus on realism. I wanted my script to feel real I wanted to it show how people can connect randomly no matter their age or background with both my characters being at very different stages of their lives. Although her films are slightly darker focusing on gritty life styles of young struggling girls in different places in the world such as Fish Tank (2009) and American Honey (2016). The main thing I wanted to mirror from her work is her truly masterful way or building a realistic story and I did this through my setting choice and having two characters with a power dynamic one with more life experience and one who is still new to the adult world.
Another screenplay I had in mind when writing this was that of Good Will Hunting (1998) again the dialogued scenes I focused on were the ones between two characters with a struggling power dynamic. Robin Williams is a therapist and with most his one on one scenes with Matt Damon, a prodigy who see himself as a failure, he holds the power with his engaging storytelling and his encrypted life lessons that lie within the stories. I really wanted to showcase this kind of dialogue that a shifting power dynamic can always be seen as both sides switch between teacher and student.
